How long does it take to speak French?

I have been studying French for about 5-6 months now and it comes relatively easy to me. I know Spanish so some knowledge from Spanish helps me in French. I can say phrases introducing myself, conjugate many verbs, and say what the weather is like; simple stuff. And I was wondering, how many years does it take until one can carry on a conversation in French without any problems?
