APARTMENTS? what should I look for? What should I watch out for?

Me and my girlfriend are looking to start livin the good life! i think... Ive looked at a few here and there but im not entirely sure as to what im supposed to be on the look for as far as good deals go, what kinda questions should i ask? whats a good price, we want a one bedroom in a decent area, not to bad but not amazing by all means! were looking to spend around 500 to 600 a month, but like i said, I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THE HECK IM DOIN!!!!
