What are the snowy mountains in South Island that can be seen from Owhiro Bay in Wellington?

I was driving around Owhiro Bay (Wellington) this morning when it was very sunny. I saw in two snowy mountains across the sea. So I ume they are in South Island but I dont know which ones. Is it Mount Cook something?? How come we can see it from so far away :)
